Limestone Sea Stacks (Rauks) Record Past Sea Levels and Rocky Coast Evolution in the Baltic Sea (Gotland and Fårö Islands, Sweden)

چکیده
In this article, we explore the potential for sea-level change and rocky coastal evolution reconstruction hidden in one of most intriguing landforms Baltic Sea region—rauks. Those unique limestone sea stacks are preserved along coasts a number Swedish islands, with Gotland Fårö as primary locations. We contributed to long-standing debate on their origin attempted investigate modern geomorphological processes operating rauks using novel approaches rock coast studies, including Schmidt hammer tests (SHRT)—to characterize zonation degree weathering; traversing micro-erosion meters (TMEM)—to calculate shore platform downwearing rates; terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) monitor abrasion detect markers (notches) describe size shapes. Our study shows dominance mesoscale changes morphology (erosion scars, spalling, block erosion) over microscale carried out by abrasion. argue that preservation islands is result favorable sequence events rapid land uplift lithological resistance, significantly higher than observed surrounding platforms cliffs formed different types limestone. findings prove microrelief form well-preserved notches records from at least late Ancylus Lake period. Finally, incorporate results our observations into classic notions rauk formation highlight effect cutting off operation littoral consequence subaerial weathering wave action.

Land and sea animal remains from Middle Neolithic Pitted Ware sites on Gotland Island in the Baltic Sea, Sweden
Prehistoric bone material from Gotland Island situated in the centre of the Baltic Sea (Figure 1) is remarkably well preserved due to the island’s limestone substrate. Archaeological research and excavation has been ongoing on the island since the beginning of last century (Wennersten 1907; Nihlén 1927; Stenberger et al. 1943), and the use of traditional farming methods has spared many prehisto...
متن کاملChanges in extreme sea-levels in the Baltic Sea
In a climate change context, changes in extreme sea-levels rather than changes in the mean are of particular interest from the coastal protection point of view. In this work, extreme sea-levels in the Baltic Sea are investigated based on daily tide gauge records for the period 1916 2005 using the annual block maxima approach. Extreme events are analysed based on the generalised extreme value di...
متن کاملSea ice in the Baltic Sea e A review
Although the seasonal ice cover of the Baltic Sea has many similarities to its oceanic counterpart in Polar Seas and Oceans, there are many unique characteristics that mainly result from the brackish waters from which the ice is formed, resulting in low bulk salinities and porosities. In addition, due to the milder climate than Polar regions, the annual maximum ice extent is highly variable, an...
